Boy or girl? In Germany, the birth of a child, including the gender, must be reported to the registry office within one week. For a long time, a binary understanding of gender prevailed in our society, meaning that legally and socially only the genders "male" or "female" existed, which meant that people of a different gender were excluded from society. Since 2013, people in Germany have been able to waive their gender entry in the birth register or, since December 2018, select the entry "diverse". The Federal Constitutional Court's decision in October 2017 that the Basic Law also protects the gender identity of people who cannot be permanently categorised as either male or female was decisive. But does a third gender entry do justice to gender diversity? How is gender affiliation defined, and what is the status of the discourse on the gender of non-binary, transgender or transsexual people?

The exhibition "The third gender. Diversity is more" shows multicultural positions that deal with these questions and reflect on how to deal with gender diversity from a social and societal perspective.
