When we meet someone new, we automatically know how we should behave - our culture has taught us this. Culture teaches us what we should do and how we should feel. It gives us certainty in uncertain situations. Elwy Schutten asks in her collection: Can a piece of jewellery also convey this?
Typical motifs that convey stories, feelings and behaviours can be found in a culture's jewellery. Elwy Schutten uses motifs from former Pforzheim jewellery producers to emboss patterns on metal sheets with a drop hammer, which she combines with soapstone. These two materials represent two layers of our identity. With her jewellery pieces, the designer asks: How do these layers relate to each other? And how does culture influence our identity?
