Suiting the Body

Suiting the Body, literally "giving the body a (suitable) suit", offers
an alternative approach to traditional tailoring. The men's suit contains a multi-layered, yet contradictory symbolism. His idea was inspired by the ideals of enlightenment and rationality, which reject physicality. At the same time, however, the cut follows the model of the ideal male body of classical Greek sculpture. The rejection of sensuality and striving for a "life of the spirit" are counteracted by the very erotic, subliminal emphasis on the body.

The men's suit emphasises the anatomy through the singular interpretation of the male body. Almost all human garments are based on metric patterns: they are two-dimensional abstractions of the breathing body. Although a bespoke suit is tailored specifically to the wearer, it still translates the body into a garment of a standardised system, which leads us to perceive the body as a template.

This series uses a different method: by making a mould of the body, the moulds can be unfolded and spread out flat like an orange peel.
The resulting garments emphasise shapes that conventional suits conceal: protruding shoulder blades, an expansive masculinity and clearly defined calves.

Welmoed Bosch

Welmoed Bosch studied fashion design at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. As a fashion designer, she is fascinated by the translation of anatomy into clothing. Her working method is based on the technical and haptic properties of clothing and multidisciplinary theoretical research. Welmoed lives in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
